Weekend Assignment: Happy Birthday

Karen has this weekend's assignment at Outpost Mavarin...

Weekend Assignment #206: My birthday is coming up on Monday. In the grand tradition of the Beatles and my mom*, I magnanimously declare this to be your birthday, too. So, what would you like for your birthday? (And no, I won't actually be buying it for you. Sorry!)

Well, if you're not going to buy it for me, I hardly see the point. But what I really, really want and really, really need is a new digital camera. I think I'll just have to break down and buy it for myself if no one else will. I'd like to go with an entry-level DSLR, but just can't see paying that kind of money at this point in time. I'll probably get something a lot cheaper like the Canon Powershot A570 IS. It's an inexpensive point-and-shoot camera that I can keep with me at all times and whip out whenever a photo opportunity arises. Once I get a new camera, I need to take as many photos as I can to work on my composition techniques. And I'd really like to get back to posting a lot of photos here and at my woefully neglected Flickr page. The DSLR can wait until later.

Ah, but someone else might buy it for you, now that you've told us about it. Someone closer to you. Someone with money. Or possibly someone names Duane!

I went and got me a Digital SLR for Xmas...and one thing it is NOT is something you can carry around with you everywhere, whip out and take a shot. Especially not with my telephoto zoom attached to it...it weighs about three pounds, at that point.

I promised myself that when the price of DSLRs came down to something kind of believable (closer to the $400 I paid for my last digital) I would get me one. Now all I have to do is re-learn how to use an SLR after all those years of automatic-everything digitals.

Karen--Maybe this is what I'll spend my economic stimulus check on. I guess what kind of camera I buy will depend on the amount of the check.

Lisa--I used to have an Olympus SLR film camera many, many moons ago. Then I rushed out and bought one of the first Olympus digital cameras made. That's what I'm still using. I'm afraid, like you, that I'd have to relearn everything I used to know about using an SLR. Yeah, lugging around a camera, lenses, filters, etc. definitely cuts down on portability unless you go with a good camera bag or backpack.

Hi :)

I am sooo looking forward to you posting photos more often, you have an excellent eye for photography. :) And you will get back into the swing of things quicker then you might imagine. :)

Always, Carly

Oh, I don't know... I carry my DSLR everywhere. Most people think it's just a part of my outfit! Seriously, ask for the DSLR. If you used one once, it will come back to you in no time. I'd also ask for a point & shoot camera as well so you can stick it in your pocket and have it for those times when you know people will be uncomfortable with a DSLR in sight, but you might miss a really good picture ;0)

My husband keeps his DSLR with him nearly all the time, so it's certainly doable. I have the little pocket digital that goes everywhere with me.

They're both worth having, if you ask me.
